The Effect of First Aid Education on Students’ Knowledge at State Senior High School 3 Martapura

Abstract

Students are at risk of experiencing injuries in the school environment, making knowledge of first aid an important component of health education. However, knowledge of first aid among students may still be limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of first aid education on students’ knowledge at State Senior High School 3 Martapura. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study was conducted in September 2024 at State Senior High School 3 Martapura. The sample consisted of 40 eleventh-grade students selected using random sampling based on the Slovin formula. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire administered before and after the first aid education. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of ? = 0.05. The mean knowledge score increased from 63.64 before the intervention to 87.39 after the intervention, representing an increase of 23.75 points or 37.3%. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a significant difference in knowledge scores before and after the intervention (Z = -5.521; p < 0.001). First aid education was associated with a significant improvement in students’ knowledge regarding first aid at State Senior High School 3 Martapura. Regular first aid education may be considered as part of school health education programs. Further studies are recommended to assess first aid practical skills in addition to knowledge.
